Fuerte Goup Hotels takes on the challenge of recovering 2 tons of abandoned plastics in the mediterranean sea

Amare Ibiza

This initiative, which is part of the hotel chain’s commitment to the United Nations Global Compact, will be carried out in collaboration with the company Gravity Wave, through its Plastic Free Oceans Movement.

All the plastic collected in this initiative will be transformed into sustainable furniture and products, thus promoting the circular economy and the protection of the environment.

The brand name, Amàre, comes from the union of two words: love and sea

On the 20th of July 2023. Love for the sea is something innate in the Amàre brand, which was created by Fuerte Group Hotels as a result of the union of two words: love and sea. That is why Amàre Beach Hotel Ibiza has been the hotel chosen by the Andalusian hotel chain to move from words to actions, undertaking an ambitious challenge: to recover 2 tonnes of plastic waste from the Mediterranean Sea.

To achieve this, Fuerte Group Hotels has signed an agreement with the company Gravity Wave. Since 2019, the company has been dedicated to collecting and giving a second life to plastic from seas and ports, with the aim of generating a positive impact on the planet.

To face this huge challenge, Gravity Wave collaborates with a community of more than 5,000 traditional fishermen, who are responsible for collecting plastics every time they go out to fish. In addition, they have set up a collection system in more than 70 ports throughout Spain to prevent fishing nets from falling into the sea. Thanks to these joint actions, it is possible to recover dredges from the sea and, at the same time, prevent unused ones from ending up polluting marine environments.

40% of the plastic collected comes from ghost nets, which are abandoned in the sea and pose a danger to multiple species that get caught in them. Of the remaining 60%, 30% is packaging, 10% metal and aluminium and 20% other plastics.

For each booking at Amàre Beach Hotel Ibiza, 1 kg of plastic from the Mediterranean Sea will be collected

The campaign launched by Fuerte Group Hotels in collaboration with Gravity Wave provides that for every booking made at the Amàre Beach Hotel Ibiza, through the call centre or the website, the hotel chain will allocate a percentage to the elimination of 1 kg of plastic from the Mediterranean Sea. The aim of this environmental project, whose evolution can be followed on this website, is to reach 2 tonnes of plastic thanks to the bookings made between the 1st of July and the 31st of August.

The aim is to comply with Sustainable Development Goal number 14, which invites members of the United Nations Global Compact, such as Fuerte Group Hotels, to preserve the natural environments where the hotel establishments are located.

According to Martín Aleixandre, commercial director of Fuerte Group Hotels, the plastic pollution is the biggest and most tangible challenge of climate change. He said that the hotel chain is pleased to be able to collaborate with Gravity Wave, and to contribute with this campaign to provide a solution to this problem, restoring the natural cycle of nature and its balance. Moreover, he concludes, that the transformation of the plastics obtained into sustainable furniture and products gives a second life to this waste, which closes the perfect circuit of the circular economy.
