An excellent alternative for the city kids who don’t have a ‘village’, can have a similar childhood to the one you had when you were little.

The animal farm of Fuerte Grazalema organises a kids’ activity every weekend and during July and August will be carried out every day

On the 31st of May 2023. The ageing of the population, and the progressive abandonment of rural areas, means that many children in the big cities can no longer enjoy the once traditional ‘village holidays’. During the 80s and 90s, mi pueblo (my village) was a common expression among young people in Spain’s big cities.

Although they were born in cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, or Seville, among many others, they all felt that the villages where their grandparents, and perhaps their parents, had been born were their own. And when summer came, the departure to these corners of Spain was one of the most eagerly awaited moments for the youngest in the house.

The reason? The opportunity to leave the traffic, noise and pavement behind, to enjoy a country life where one could take pleasure of the daily contact with nature, to explore the countryside by bike, to swing the dreams while the stars light up the night sky and to learn to differentiate between chickens and turkeys, rams and sheep, among many other experiences.

Considering this, when Fuerte Grazalema opened its door 21 years ago at the heart of the Natural Park of Sierra de Grazalema, it was clear that the best accessory for a mountain hotel was to have its own animal farm. Since then, thousands of kids have learnt at them how to raise hens, what the rabbits like eating, and how the sheep suckle lambs, among many other aspects of the wildlife.

In fact, the activity with animals that Fuerte Grazalema freely organizes every weekend from 7:10pm to 7:50 pm, taking advantage of the sunset, is an absolute success. That’s why, during July and August, the experience will take place daily. The aim is that the children interact with the animals, by feeding them, and learning many anecdotes and interesting facts about their habits, tastes, and needs.

Nowadays, the animal farm of Fuerte Grazalema is composed of 2 sheep and 2 lambs born in April, 18 adult hens, 7 Japanese chickens, 3 chicken litters, 7 geese, 1 peacock, 2 female turkeys and 6 rabbits. All of them delight the kids who stay at Fuerte Grazalema and, also, many adults that join them in the activity, is part of the Fuerte Live Animation Program of Fuerte Grazalema.
